PrestaShop 9.2: what’s new, and should you update?
In short: PrestaShop 9.2 came out on 30 September 2026. Three new features matter for your store: one-page checkout, custom fields for your products, customers and orders, and an AI assistant in the back office. If your store already runs on PrestaShop 9, the update is worth it, after testing on a copy. On 1.7 or 8, it is a real migration, which needs planning.
PrestaShop 9.2 is an update to version 9, released on 30 September 2026 after a test version published in July. It is not a new generation, like the move from 8 to 9: it is the same family, with new features added. It runs on PHP 8.1 to 8.5, the language that powers your store on the server.

One-page checkout
Until now, PrestaShop took your customers through four steps, each on its own screen: their contact details, the address, the delivery method, then payment. With 9.2, a module that comes with PrestaShop brings everything together on a single page.
Ordering without an account: customers simply start with their email address. Guest checkout becomes the default path.
Everything updates without reloading the page: when customers change their address, the delivery options adjust straight away, and choosing a carrier updates the payment methods and the total.
You stay in control: in the back office, you choose between one-page checkout and the classic four-step checkout. If you run several stores, each one can use either.
Why it matters: according to the Baymard Institute, which has been studying online stores for years, about 7 carts out of 10 are abandoned. In its survey of US shoppers who abandoned a purchase during checkout, 18% say they did so because they were asked to create an account, and 17% because checkout was too long or too complicated. Those are exactly the two obstacles this new feature tackles.
With one-page checkout, customers see everything at a glance. If they change address or carrier, shipping costs and the total update without reloading the page.
Three precautions before switching it on:
The theme: the new checkout is ready for Hummingbird, PrestaShop’s default theme since version 9.1, and for themes built on it. If your theme is based on the older Classic theme, like many stores’ themes, it will need adapting.
Payment and delivery modules: they must work in this new flow, and PrestaShop itself asks their developers to check them. Place a real test order with every payment method and every carrier.
Payment is still payment: the single page removes steps before payment, but your customers may still be sent to their bank’s page to confirm the purchase.
And if you already use a quick checkout module, compare before removing it: it may offer settings that PrestaShop’s version does not have yet.
Custom fields for your products, customers and orders
Every store has its own information: the fabric of a garment, the warranty on an appliance, an order’s reference in your management software, an internal note about a loyal customer. Until now, this required a purpose-built module or, worse, a change to PrestaShop’s core that broke easily with every update.
With “Extra Properties”, designed together with the Kiwik agency, these fields are created in the Advanced Parameters menu of the back office. They are added to product, combination, customer and order records, work in several languages and across several stores, and stay available to the software connected to your store. Their data is stored separately, without changing PrestaShop’s core, which avoids unpleasant surprises during updates.
Two limits to keep in mind: to show these fields on your pages, for example on the product page, your theme needs a place for them, a small integration job done once and for all. And PrestaShop notes, in its developer documentation, that this part may still change.
Ask AI: an AI assistant in your back office
Built into your store’s back office, Ask AI works like a colleague you can question in plain language. For example: “Which products sold best this month?”, or “Rewrite this product’s description”. It can also act on your store, but it asks for your approval before every action.
You get it with PrestaShop Classic, the free version downloaded from the official website. It relies on PrestaShop’s MCP server, introduced in November 2025, which lets an AI talk to your store. You choose your AI provider, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Mistral, and connect it with your own access key: usage is then billed to you by that provider, at its own rates.
Before opening it to your team, two good habits: check what the chosen provider does with your store’s data, which includes information about your customers, and always review what the AI suggests before approving it. An AI can be wrong with great confidence.
Other improvements
Klaviyo built in: a marketing automation module that comes with PrestaShop Classic sends automatic emails and text messages based on what your customers buy and do. It requires a Klaviyo account, which has its own pricing.
Better-framed thumbnails: for each image size, you now choose between showing the whole photo, cropping it to fill the whole frame, or keeping its original proportions. A simple way to avoid empty bands around photos of different shapes.
Three new product conditions: open box, damaged and new with defects join new, used and refurbished. Handy for selling clearance stock or customer returns transparently.
The rest of the update mainly concerns developers: six back office pages rewritten on a more modern foundation, offered as an option, the groundwork for a future business-to-business mode, still switched off, and fixes to the Hummingbird theme, which also becomes more accessible.
Should you update?
It all depends on your store’s version. To check it, open your back office: Advanced Parameters, then Information.
Your store runs on 9.0 or 9.1: yes. It is an update within the same family, and PrestaShop announced that 9.1.5, released on 18 August 2026, was the last planned update for 9.1: the next fixes will come in 9.2. Modules built for PrestaShop 9 should keep working, but test everything on a copy first, especially payment and delivery.
Your store runs on 8.2: there is no rush for security. PrestaShop still publishes security updates for 8.2, such as 8.2.8, which fixed five vulnerabilities in August 2026, and will keep doing so until PrestaShop 10 comes out. But 8.2 only runs on PHP 8.1 at most, whose security updates stopped at the end of 2025. 9.2 is a good target for your migration: plan it at a quiet time.
Your store runs on 1.7 or older: it has not received any updates since June 2025. You need to migrate, and you may as well aim straight for 9.2. My guide to migrating from 1.7 explains how.
My recommendation based on your store’s version. To check it, open your back office: Advanced Parameters, then Information.
A word on timing: avoid touching your checkout just before the holidays. If the update cannot be tested and put live before mid-November, ahead of Black Friday, it is better to schedule it for January.
Updating safely, in 5 steps
A successful update goes unnoticed: your customers keep ordering, and one morning the store runs on the new version.
The inventory. Write down your version, your modules and your theme, and check with each developer that their module is ready for 9.2. Also identify any custom development: that is what needs the most attention.
A working copy. Everything is prepared on a copy of the store, protected by a password, with emails and real payments switched off. Your store keeps selling in the meantime.
The update. PrestaShop’s official tool, the Update Assistant, runs the update from the back office and offers a full backup before doing anything. It also lets you roll back from that backup.
The tests. We place real test orders with every payment method and every carrier, with one-page checkout and then with four steps, and check emails, invoices and exchanges with your management software.
Going live. We run the update again on the real store at the quietest time for your sales, with a fresh backup, then keep an eye on orders over the following days.
Would you rather hand it over?
Updating to PrestaShop 9.2, migrating from 1.7 or 8, setting up one-page checkout, testing your modules: I take care of everything, and you talk directly to the person who writes the code.
Yes. PrestaShop is free, open-source software, and so is 9.2. What costs money is the time spent updating and testing, any paid modules, AI usage billed by the provider you choose for Ask AI, and a Klaviyo subscription if you use it.
Is one-page checkout mandatory?
No. You choose in the back office between one-page checkout and the classic four-step checkout, and you can switch back at any time.
Will my modules work with PrestaShop 9.2?
Modules built for PrestaShop 9 should keep working. Payment and delivery modules should be tested first with the new one-page checkout. Ask each developer whether their module is ready for 9.2.
Does Ask AI send my store’s data to an AI?
Yes: to answer, the assistant sends the provider you chose the data needed for your question. Check that provider’s privacy policy and limit the assistant to the people who need it. It never changes anything in your store without your go-ahead.
My store runs on 8.2: should I move to 9.2 now?
Not urgently: 8.2 still receives PrestaShop’s security fixes. But it is limited to PHP 8.1, which has not been updated since the end of 2025. Plan the migration to 9.2 at a quiet time for your sales, ideally after the holidays if you cannot finish it before mid-November.
How much does an update to PrestaShop 9.2 cost?
It depends on your starting point, your modules and your theme. I never quote blind. Describe your store: I reply within one business day, with a free, clear, itemised quote.
